September 23, 2011Deion Taylor, a 6'6 explosive wing from New Orleans, joins Terry Allen as the second prospect to announce their intentions to join Coach Mooney and the Richmond Spiders for the 2011-2012 season. He chose Richmond over Texas-El Paso, Tulane, ULL, Louisiana Tech, Tulsa, Murray State, Northwestern State and Samford.
Taylor is a phenomenal athlete with a soft shooting touch. He uses that athleticism to take bigger, slower defenders off the dribble and is equally effective using his strength to post up smaller guards. He enters his senior season at the young age of 16 and is looking to continue to develop as a player. He has been working hard on improving creating his own shot and ball handling in the off-season.
Taylor is no stranger to high-level basketball. His high school team St. Augustine's won the Louisiana state title last year. The team has several highly sought after recruits including point guard Javan Felix who has committed to play for Texas. Taylor states that his team repeating as state champs is his primary focus for his senior season. "Pre-season is going pretty well. We only lost two games all summer. We won states last year and we are looking to repeat this year."
Taylor took official visits to Richmond and UTEP and also took an unofficial visit to Tulane. He states that his decision resulted from the comfort level that he felt about both the basketball program and school at Richmond. "I pretty much narrowed it down to Richmond and UTEP. I felt more comfortable with the staff and the players at Richmond. I liked the environment at the school and the campus."
