October 24, 2009 Justin Forte scored two touchdowns on a career high 118 yards on 26 carries as Richmond defeated Massachusetts 34-12 on Saturday.Richmond extended its winning streak to a Football Championship Subdivision-best 16 games and matched its best start in history. The Spiders (7-0, 5-0 Colonial Athletic Association) intercepted the Minutemen six times and began three first-half drives inside the Massachusetts' 27-yard line. Patrick Weldon had the Spiders' first interception, putting his team on the Minutemen 27. Following a 24-yard run by Eric Ward, Ben Keating gave Richmond a 7-3 lead on a 1-yard rush in the first quarter. Justin Rogers ended two more first half drives with an interception and a fumble recovery. In the secon half Derek Hatcher started with an interception, then Colin McConaghy took one away. Big Parker Miles fulfilled every linemans dream by intercepting a tipped pass and returning it 15 yards for a touchdown wihe EP making the score, Richmond 27-3. On what was likely to be the last play of the game Michael Ireland intercepted a pass on the UMass 8 and returned it 91 yards to the 1 yard line to end the game. Ward was 8 of 20 for 52 yards passing in the rain with several passes thrown away to avoid sacks and a number of passes dropped in the rain. Eric picked his opportunities and rushed for 62 yards on 9 carries. Kyle Havens was 10 of 25 for 78 yards and four interceptions and Scott Woodward was 11 of 23 for 137 yards and an interception for the Minutemen. |
